Dalton DBC 1000-21
Better belt grip and improved performance.
The 2021+ Commander 1000 models have somewhat soft CVT calibration from the factory. We have developed a new clutch calibration that will bring your Commander to life. This kit uses a complete new calibration of CVT components for both clutches to work together to improve belt grip and performance. This kit is Commander specific, and developed for the most common intended uses of this version of the vehicle. It is more sporty. More like the Sport versions, but with comfortable cruise RPM for trail cruising and smooth for work applications. With the kit installed the vehicle will get into a better RPM zone and do so more quickly. This results in harder acceleration, better efficiency, and also improved “back shifting of the belt” when the vehicle senses load from soft terrain or hills, etc.
The flyweight lever arms in our kit are a totally different profile, distribution of mass and design. This whole package is designed to work together. Sometimes you need to change more than a few pieces to get the best all around package for the application. This clutch kit is a very noticeable improvement. A smooth more positive engagement of the belt. Improved throttle response and acceleration compared to stock clutches. The kit is adjustable for different tires and situations. We have spent plenty of time testing different applications and the complete instructions tell you how to set up accordingly for best tested results.
Having some adjustability in the flyweights means that if you change to different tires or situation later you can set up for that at the time.
Larger/ heavier tires in particular hurt performance everywhere. Rotating weight and added gearing from larger tires hurt acceleration and top speed. This kit improves bottom end and belt performance without loss of top speed, in fact acceleration is quicker to get to top speed. A better clutch calibration for controlling “rate of shift of the belt” for these tire sizes.
Additional Notes:
FAQ: Why is the price higher on this kit than some other Dalton kits and different brands?
Answer: Its true this one is one of the more expensive kits we have. We did plenty of testing looking for cheaper options. The best results came from a calibration that consisted of most components being changed in both clutches. We test for important things like acceleration and “back shifting of the belt” when the vehicle senses load, which is a key to belt life and performance. Trying to simplify it was just not the best thing do in this case.
We change all 6 flyweights as well as other parts in both clutches. Flyweights are expensive. Trying to use any existing flyweights we had for other models, like the X3, etc.could have been cheaper and easier, but it was not only the wrong profile for this application, it also would have led us to use a lesser number of flyweights. As you probably know, we have been working on Can Am models for a long time. We feel it is important to use all 6 flyweights in this application. This clutch uses a type of plastic composite slider blocks for the flyweight surface to slide/operate on. Many other similar clutches use steel rollers. These composite sliders are a replaceable wear surface. Using all six spreads the load for best durability, and this set up offered the best all around performance.
FAQ: Is this kit similar, or is the helix in this kit similar to Dalton’s kit for the Maverick Sport 1000R ?
Answer: No, it is not. This kit is designed specifically for the 2021+ Commander 1000 models.
The stock primary flyweights in the Maverick Sport 1000R are very different shape and design compared to the stock Commander flyweights, and also very different from the ones in this kit. Our kit for the Maverick Sport 1000R uses the stock maverick flyweights and thus a very different helix. Both clutches work together and any different parts in a primary have effect on the required parts in the secondary. The Stock Commander flyweights were not used at all in this kit.
FAQ: How large can the tires be that are used?
Answer: This kit is complete and used for stock to 32” tires. The kit will help for any larger tires, however, once you get to 33-34” tires (without gear reduction) you are getting outside the acceptable level allowed by the diameter of the clutches on the vehicle and could easily overheat belts. We do know that lots use these sizes anyway, and we have done testing and developed parts to help improve clutching for those who choose to do so. If you are running these sized tires contact us with your situation and we will help with changing/adding optional parts if necessary.
We have NOT tested this vehicle with any gear reduction.
Often with gear reduction, clutch kits are set up like stock size tires but each application/ratio could be different. We do not make recommendations on applications we have not tested.
